What is indoor lead climbing?
Lead climbing begins with the rope on the ground, instead of hanging from anchors at the top of the wall. The climber ties into one end of the rope, and the belayer attaches to the rope, roughly 10-15 feet from the climber. As the climber ascends the gym wall, they clip the rope into pre-bolted points of protection (typically permadraws) along the route. As the climber makes moves and clips, the belayer feeds slack out for the climber. Lead belaying is more dynamic than top rope belaying, and requires constant engagement and communication with the climber.
