Welcome to Planet Rock – we are excited to introduce you to the awesome sport of rock climbing!
Planet Rock offers a variety of ways for new climbers to start rock climbing. All first-time visitors to our gyms are required to take a safety orientation or complete Starter Package prior to climbing inside either of our facilities. Safety orientations do not require reservations, but Starter Packages and advanced classes require reservations. Please read the rock climbing options below to plan your first visit.
The minimum age to climb at Planet Rock is 4 years of age. The minimum age to belay at Planet Rock is 16 years of age.
Planet Rock requires all visitors to our gyms (climbers, guardians + spectators) to have a digital waiver on file with the gyms. We recommend completing this waiver prior to your first visit.
ROCK CLIMBING OPTIONS
Bouldering
Bouldering is a version of free-climbing on shorter walls without ropes. This form of climbing offers zero protection from ropes and gear. All bouldering falls are ground falls.
All new climbers are required to take a Boulder Orientation prior to climbing at Planet Rock. Walk-in Bouldering Orientations are available every day of the week.
Children under the age of 16 must be supervised at all times while bouldering at Planet Rock.
Boulder-Only Cost: $25

Auto-Belays
Auto-belays provide the similar experience and protection as rope climbing, without the need for a belayer.
All new climbers looking to use the auto-belays are required to take an Auto-Belay Orientation prior to climbing at Planet Rock. Walk-in Auto-Belay Orientations are available every day of the week.
Children under the age of 16 must be supervised by a guardian at all times. Children under the age of 14 are required to be clipped into auto-belays by a guardian.

Top Rope Climbing
Top rope climbing is a version of climbing where the rope is anchored into chains at the top of the climbing wall. Top Rope climbing requires a partner, aka belayer. All new climbers looking to climb on top ropes at Planet Rock must either successfully complete a Starter Package or successfully pass a belay check upon arrival.
Minimum age to belay or take this lesson is 16 years old.
Starter Package Cost: $45
Includes: rental gear + extra day pass (future day)
Belay Check: Free w/ $20 day pass
*We recommend that brand new customers book our Starter Packages in advance. Walk-ins will be placed into the next available lesson.

Starter Packages
Top rope climbing is a version of climbing where the rope is anchored into chains at the top of the climbing wall. Top Rope climbing requires a partner, aka belayer. The climber attaches to one end of the rope, and the belayer attaches into the opposite side of the rope. You must be a proficient belayer to climb on ropes at Planet Rock. All new climbers looking to climb on top ropes at Planet Rock must either successfully complete a Starter Package -or- successfully pass a belay check upon arrival.
Planet Rock offers Starter Packages every day of the week at both locations, however times and availability are subject to change. Starter Packages MUST be scheduled in advance through our website or by phone. Minimum age to take this lesson is 16 years old. The Starter Package cost is $45 per person and includes rental gear and a day pass on the day of the lesson – as well as an additional day pass to be used within 30 days of the lesson.

Lead Climbing
Lead climbing is a version of rope climbing where the climber brings the rope up from the ground, and clips the rope into designated safety points (quick draws) as they ascend the climbing wall. This style of rock climbing requires maximum proficiency with both lead belaying and lead climbing. Experienced lead climbers can request a lead check from the front desk during any open gym session. Availability of lead checks is subject to staff availability and can vary from day to day.
Planet Rock offers Lead Lessons at both locations most weeks of the year.
Lead Lesson Prerequisites:
• Top Rope belay check complete (ages 16+)
• 8+mo. experience top rope climbing (regularly)
• Comfortable climbing routes at the 5.10 grade or higher with no takes or falls
• Comfortable using a tubular (ATC) belay device
